Bedbugs - How To Get Rid Of These Parasitic Pests

by Ping Enriquez

Like every pest known to man, bed bugs are aggravating tiny creatures that wreak havoc in our lives. These nocturnal bugs not only spoil our sleep by preying on us during nighttime, they also leave us with inflamed and unpleasant rashes. Because of their small size, they are seldom seen, but their presence can undeniably be felt. Unfortunately for us, they spread so easily in our home. They are also hard to spot and difficult to get rid of.

Bed bugs are small parasitic insects that are elliptical in shape and a tiny reddish brown in color. They are only around five millimeters long, and can disappear in small gaps in the walls or floors and in snug spaces in mattresses, pillows, clothing, and other fabrics. Bedbugs, or Cimex lectularius, got their name because they attack at night and they have a penchant for attacking people while they sleep in bed.

They have been bugging people for thousands of years. There was even an instance during the 1940s that they were almost completely eliminated in North America, but they have returned in mid 1990s. And today, they are as frustrating as ever before.

Because they can hide in small crevices and attack during our sleep when we least know it, they are almost undetectable to people. We can still extinguish them even though we can rarely catch them in action. But admittedly, they are more difficult to wipe out than other parasites like cockroaches and mosquitoes.

To extinguish mosquitoes and other pests, we need to get rid of their breeding ground, which is likely a puddle of stagnant water and filthy and wet spots. We can fumigate the house and get rid of the trouble places. But with bed bugs, they easily distribute everywhere in the house so it's difficult to spot where they are hiding. It's not recommended to fumigate our beds, clothing, etc. But they are still not unbeatable. They can be wiped out from our houses with tried and tested methods.

Fumigation is just one of the numerous steps to extinguish bed bugs. There are lots of processes involved. Cleaning the whole residence and putting protective cases on the bed, pillows, and other items can also help. Some people think using pesticides can solve the problem, but bed bugs can easily develop resistance to most products so it probably won't work completely. It's time to call on the professional bug exterminators if the infiltration continues or exacerbates despite all efforts.
