The point is this: The only thing that makes your offering different from the other 100,000+ marketers is truly something that only you may offer. Your special feature is YOU! Your experiences, motives for beginning a business, targets and dreams are special to you. This is what people who want to follow you want to know about and this is what will direct you forward in your business. If you spend all of your time pitching and telling people how fantastic your goods and comp plan are then you'll seem like a salesman with no personality! Would you need to follow somebody like that?

You need to be able to inspire people. Be open and truthful and share more of your self with the people you speak to, so that they could see your interest and eagerness. Once people know that you are enthusiastic about what you do, since you know you are working toward your dreams, they will be queuing up to ask you what you are working on! The number one thing I would look into is whether you like them as a person. This might sound shallow to some, but I assure you it is a very valid criteria. Building your website with a solo-designer will something akin to a short-relationship, and you two will need to have excellent rapport and communication. This person will need to "get" what you want and be able to put into practice the things you envision.

In general, looking at random people off of the directory, it will be hard to find someone whom you instantly like. You will generally have to look at hundreds of random freelancers before you find someone whom you "click with". But there is a way to increase your odds and get there faster. I recommend that you look at what people similar to you have chosen. Ask all of your friends if they can recommend a freelance web designer and see what they say. The recommendations you get will be more likely to be up your alley and you will have to wade through fewer candidates.

If none of your close friends has recommendations in real life, here is a novel idea, ask on Facebook! That's right; you should post on Facebook and ask if anyone can recommend good freelance web-designers. The answers won't be as good as asking close friends, but they'll still be better than asking random people on the street or looking at the yellow pages.

Once you have a good list of candidates, it's time to assess each one individually. First things first, you will want to ask for their portfolio. See if you like their general style.

And then you may want to go ahead and grill these people. Ask them the hard questions that you feel awkward about asking. Don't worry about "being a jerk". Demand that these people show you or prove that you need to hire them over other freelancers.
